Can anyone tell me what the difference in the action is between a 7 ft metal-ferruled vs a glass-ferruled Cortland FR-2000?
Thanks, GB |

Hi GB;
I don't have two FR2000's to compare but I do have two 8' 5wt Pro Crests, one with metal and one with glass ferrule. Other than cosmetic differences, I can't tell them apart when fishing them. There's a long debate on who made both series of rods but my guess is both series were made by St. Croix. The FR2000's resemble the St. Croix Imperial glass rods and both the FR2000 and Pro Crest rods have very similar features. I know the casting style is similar with the FR2000's being a little slower and deeper flexing. Hope this helps; Waynebh |

Just an opinion, but the difference is probably negligible. The results in casting the rod designed with the metal ferrules should not be so different from the
spigot ferruled rod when using the same line. This may not make any sense to you but if there is any difference it may be in the effort necessary, or lack
there of, to accomplish the cast. I believe the spigot ferruled rods transfer the power of your casting stroke more efficiently. Respectfully RVReclus

Hmmm, pretty sure they never made a metal ferruled FR2000. Did I misunderstand the question??

Well, I found a 7 ft FR-2000 (5-6 wt) at a good price the other day and took it out on the lawn tonight. This feels like a really great rod. Very light weight,
too. Matched it up with a lightweight reel and had a blast. Definately a keeper.

GB, what line do you like best on that 7 footer?

The first one I tried on it was a Teeny First Cast WF5 for smaller waters with an Orvis Battenkill Barstock II reel.
I also used a Teeny BS-100 on a Martin MG-3. These are the same reels and lines I use on my "AndyManYankee" 6ft 5wt Wulff 2071 replica. Both set-ups were "just right" for this rod. |

Wow, that was an easy match up. Good on you. Is your FR-2000 glass ferruled? Some say the ferrule is not deep enough, and subject to the sections sliding
apart during use. I have not had that problem yet, but it is something you might watch out for. Whatcha gonna fish for with that Cortland? My 7 1/2 footer
is my go-to trout dry and wet fly rod. Come to think of it, I have not used it for a while, cause I mostly streamer fish in the fall, hoping to catch Free
Willy. Hhhhmmmm, maybe some winter midge fishing on a warm day.

Corlay, this is the only one I have ever seen. It is a medium brown, with a definite reddish, kind of burgundy tinge (is that how you spell tinge??). I am
not much of a Fenwick guy (yet!) so I don't have a comparison to those blanks. Model 1-625-1. Hold it up to the light, and it glows. Wraps are very
transparent. Does all that match yours, or is yours different? I think I smell a photo session coming. Has a wooden plug in the male ferrule end. I just
now had to bring it forth to the light of day. Makes me want to fishin', just as our snowstorm is starting.

wacokid54 wrote:Waco, as far as I understand it, there are 2 very distinctly different flavors of this model (FR-2000 series) rod One is as you've described, with a burgundy tone. The other is like mine, with a much lighter, warmer-colored blank. I did post a pic here, in my Cortland Apple thread, to which I believe that you made a reply? Does yours resemble this rod? I'm thinking not...

Same grip, seat, wraps. I am struggling with color. In bright sunlight, mine looks more brown. Under a light bulb in the basement, some burgundy tones.
Pics coming.

Two different photos, same rod, different colors. Corlay, which version of the FR-2000 does this one appear to be? I suck at rod photography.

Hi Wacokid54;
Is the rod in your photos translucent in sunlight?? Waynebh |

wacokid54 wrote:beats me! pic#1 looks like the darker-blank version, but pic#2 looks like mine! But I'm pretty sure there is a distinct difference in the colors, width, pattern, etc in the thread-wraps near the ferrulling point? I went back to a few ebaTY actions that I had marked as "watched", for rods I knew were not like mine, but the pics are no longer available...

Wayne, it picks up a warm glow in the sun. The lighter colored photo above is with some light coming through from a light bulb down in the Bat Cave.

Looks just like mine, as well. Right down to the nonfunctional decorative wrap between the hook keeper and the stripper.
